Ultherapy (Ulthera)

Dr. Russell Kridel is one of the first in the Texas Medical Center area to offer Ultherapy™ procedure, known also as Ulthera, for lifting and toning loose, lax skin.

At Facial Plastic Surgery Associates we continue our commitment to providing our patients with the most promising facial rejuvenation procedures and treatments available.

"We are so excited to offer this new Ultherapy™ treatment to our patients looking for a non-surgical cosmetic treatment to help address the effects of gravity in the aging process with no downtime," stated Dr. Kridel.

Ultherapy™ is a face and neck treatment, which uses micro-focused ultrasound waves for non-invasive tissue lifting of the brow, cheeks and neck. The sound waves deliver energy directed deep under the skin to the same tissue addressed in surgery. This gently heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. This results in a lifting of the brow and jowls and a redefining of the jawline.

Because the surface of the skin is not affected there is no downtime with Ultherapy. A full-face treatment can be completed in under an hour.

The Ulthera ultrasound device used in Ultherapy™ was cleared as a first-of-its kind device by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for use in achieving a non-invasive eyebrow lift. In the clinical trial, nine out of ten (90%) patients had a significant lift of their brow line. The patients also reported firmer skin in other areas of the face and neck as well.

There has been a great deal of press coverage of Ulthera in national magazines and television shows.  Many celebrities, including Courtney Cox have had the procedure and speak highly of their experience and results.

While Ultherapy™ is not a replacement for the more dramatic results of cosmetic surgical procedures, it can offer a natural, “no downtime” approach to improving mild to moderate lax skin.

The best way to get started on facial rejuvenation is to come in for an individual consultation. In that appointment, we will discuss your issues and determine if you are a good candidate for Ultherapy™ and design a patient treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

Questions & Answers —- Ultherapy™

What is Ultherapy™?

Ultherapy™ is a face and neck ultrasound treatment developed by Ulthera, an ultrasound-based medical technology company. Ultherapy™ lifts, tightens, and tones loose skin to counteract the effects of time and gravity.

It is the only energy-based aesthetic procedure that has been FDA-cleared for non-invasive lifting.

What is Ultherapy Amplify?

Ulthera Amplify is a new software system upgrade that has added effectiveness and decreased patient discomfort.

The system update has new treatment guidelines, which add 33% more energy to the Ulthera treatment. Recent studies have proven that by decreasing the baseline ultrasound energy of individual pulses (lines) patient comfort during the treatment is much improved without any diminution of clinical effect and results. It is thought increasing the number of “lines” of a standard treatment from 500-600 lines to now 800 lines will result in greater lifting and tightening of the face, neck, and eyebrows.

The three key elements of the Ultherapy Amplify software upgrade include:

Improved patient comfort – Patients do not require medication for treatment. However, patients can request it.

Increased efficiency through a more intuitive user interface for the physician

Updated treatment guidelines which include higher density treatments.

The new guidelines with Ulthera Amplify have increased the full Ulthera treatment time slightly, from one hour to one hour, twenty minutes.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

Ultherapy™ is an ideal treatment for men and women with mild to moderate skin laxity. Patients often describe their skin laxity as skin that has “relaxed” or “sagged” to the point of looking and/or feeling less firm.

Ultherapy™ has become a very popular treatment among patients, both young and old, who are not yet ready logistically, economically or psychologically for surgery.

“Our patients appreciate that there is no need for anesthesia and that a full face treatment can be completed in as little as 45 minutes. Patients also like the gradual, natural change that occurs over time and that their friends and co-workers don’t need to know that they have had anything done — just that they look much more refreshed.”

Ultherapy™ can also benefit younger patients who are taking a more proactive approach to the aging process and are looking to slow down the clock. This treatment allows them to maintain healthy collagen in order to help them stay one step ahead. Ultherapy is also a nice complementary treatment to other facial rejuvenation treatments and procedures that target surface issues, such as peels, injectables and fillers.

While it does not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy™ is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery.

How does the Ultherapy™ treatment work?

With Ultherapy™ a smooth applicator is placed upon your skin which projects an image onto a screen. This allows us to plan and direct where the energy will be sent. This same applicator is then used to deliver low levels of focused heat at just the right depth below the skin to achieve a positive effect, all the while leaving the surface of your skin undisturbed. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over time.

The Potential Benefits

How soon will I see results?

Like all treatments, results can vary from patient to patient. However, with just one Ultherapy™ treatment the regenerative process has begun and some patients express some immediate results, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months.

How long do the results last?

Ultherapy™ helps slow down the aging process, with results lasting an average of 12-18 months.

Is there any downtime?

There is no downtime following treatment with Ultherapy™ and our patients are able to immediately resume all normal activities and there are no special measures you need to take.

Will I have any bruising, swelling or redness?

Your skin may appear a bit flushed immediately after the Ultherapy™ treatment, but any redness should disappear within a few hours. There is no bruising and little to no swelling.

How long will my Ultherapy™ treatment take?

Treatment times for Ultherapy™ will vary depending on the area being treated. Small areas can take as little as ten minutes, while larger or multiple areas, like a full-face treatment, may take closer to an hour to complete.

Is Ultherapy™ painful?

Comfort thresholds can vary from patient to patient while the energy is being delivered. On average, our patients have described the discomfort level as mild.

With the new software upgrade, Ulthera Amplify, comfort levels have shown improvement. Patients do not require medication for treatment. However, for even greater comfort during the Ultherapy treatment we can apply topical cream. And, we can also use nerve blocks to further numb the skin if desired.

Do I need to take pain medication before the treatment?

Most patients do not need to take any pre-medications for their Ultherapy™ treatment. If you prefer to take medication, this can be discussed at the time of your initial consultation.

Is Ultherapy™ safe?

Ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for over 50 years and clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this latest application.

Will I need more than one treatment?

The majority of patients have just one Ultherapy™ treatment. In some cases, a second treatment is recommended. At 90-days post-treatment we will have you come back into the office for your follow-up appointment to photograph and review your results.

How is Ultherapy™ different than other cosmetic procedures?

Ultherapy™ is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can specifically target and strengthen the deep foundational layer of tissue. The ability to treat not just the skin but its underlying support, from the inside out, helps to provide both safe and satisfying results, with no downtime.

How is Ultherapy™ different from other laser treatments like Fraxel™?

Ultherapy is not a laser treatment, it utilizes ultrasound technology to addresses skin laxity. Fraxel addresses pigmentation and skin texture.

Fraxel is a laser treatment. It breaks up the laser beam into thousands of tiny columns of laser light. With our Fraxel Dual™ laser, we have two Fraxel™ options: the Fraxel Re:store™, which requires a series of treatments, and the Fraxel Re:pair ™,which is typically a one-time procedure but has more downtime. Both give excellent improvement in texture, wrinkles, brown spots and scars.

How is Ultherapy™ different than Thermage™?

The Ulthera ultrasound device used in Ultherapy™ was cleared as a first-of-its kind device by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for use in achieving a non-invasive eyebrow lift. In the clinical trial, nine out of ten (90%) patients had a significant lift of their brow line. Ulthera has also received FDA clearance for the device to lift tissue on the neck and under the chin.
