There are over 200 different lasers available for skin resurfacing and many more for specific target areas like laser hair removal. In addition, there is also a great deal of marketing and advertising in the marketplace. So it is easy to understand how patients can be confused or unsure of what type of laser treatment best matches their needs. In addition to the information outlined below, you can go to our video library and learn more about laser treatments.
First of all, what is a laser?
A laser is a single beam of focused light that is attracted to a specific color or target. When a laser light hits its target, energy is released often in the form of heat to erase out the specific intended target without harming the surrounding tissues.
There are over 200 different lasers available and a great deal of advertising in the marketplace. It is important to understand that no one laser does it all and that in some instances, different laser types may be used to obtain optimum results.
Which laser is best for me?
How do we decide which laser to use on a patient? Well, it depends on a number of factors. If the patient is interested in facial or skin resurfacing, an important factor in recommending a treatment plan is how long the patient has for recovery time.
When you come in for a consultation the physician will provide a well thought out treatment plan designed specifically to your needs and goals. With the significant level of skill and training of our physicians and staff, our patients feel comfortable in knowing they will receive the highest quality of care.
At FPSA, we are very fortunate because we have all 3 modalities for laser skin resurfacing in our office --- 3 different grades of lasers that can achieve the results patients will appreciate.
Facial Plastic Surgery Associates has the most technologically advanced laser hair removal system available --- the new LIGHTSheer™ Duet. As with other cosmetic rejuvenation treatments and procedures, Dr. Kridel is at the forefront and FPSA is the first and only plastic surgery practice in the Texas Medical Center to offer the LIGHTSheer™ Duet.
It is a fast, safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair with virtually no downtime needed after treatment. A series of treatments is recommended to achieve optimal results. This is due to the natural hair growth cycle. For much more extensive information about Laser Hair Removal click here.

Laser Tattoo Removal:
If you have an unwanted tattoo that you are looking to decrease the appearance of, tattoo laser removal with our Q-switched Ruby Laser may be a great alternative for you.
With the QSR laser (Q-switched Ruby Laser) it is possible to remove many types of tattoos with very little if any change to the skin. The tattoo ink in the dermal skin layer selectively absorbs a short pulse of intense red light emitted by the laser. This laser energy causes the ink to fragment into several smaller pigment particles that are then removed by the body's immune system.
The treatment plan for laser tattoo removal depends on the size, color, location, depth and age of the tattoo. At your consultation, we will be able to provide you with a treatment plan that will be most effective for your specific needs.

Skin Tightening (Radio Frequency and Ultrasound)
At FPSA we also have the most advanced skin tightening treatment ---- Ulthera (also known as Ultherapy). However, these use ultrasound or radio frequency energy respectively, and are not lasers. If you have some fine lines and laxity in your skin and are looking to give yourself a more youthful look, but are not yet ready for surgical treatments, skin tightening may be an option for you.
