Chin surgery, also known as Mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin either by augmentation with an implant or reduction surgery on the bone. You may also see chin enhancement surgery referred to as a Chinplant or a Chin Implant. This is a relatively simple procedure that can have very dramatic results.
While chin augmentation may be done as an isolated procedure, it is also very commonly combined with other facial plastic surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelift and liposuction, to achieve optimal facial balance and harmony.
Chin Implants and Nose Surgery
A weak chin can give the appearance of a larger nose or a shorter neckline. For some patients, due to genetics, trauma or malformation, cosmetic alteration of the nose, known as Rhinoplasty or Nose Job, alone does not provide the optimal facial proportion. During your consultation, we will complete a thorough evaluation, including photo imaging to determine if chin surgery is also recommended to help you achieve the facial harmony you desire.
Chin Implants and the Aging Face
With time, the chin and jawline are among the first to show signs of aging.
An additional benefit of a chin implant is that it can also improve the contours of the neckline. However, every patient is different and a chin implant by itself may or may not be the most appropriate surgical technique to help restore a more youthful appearance. Patients interested in improving their neckline should take into consideration the range of options that best suits their individual needs, which may also include single or combined procedures, such as Chin Implant, Facelift, Ulthera and Liposuction.
What is involved in chin surgery?
To insert a chin implant, Dr. Kridel will make a small incision in the natural crease line under your chin or inside the mouth. He slips into place an implant made of medical-grade material that feels like normal bone when it is in place. After implantation, he will secure the implant with a few stitches. When the incision is inside the mouth, no scarring is visible. If the incision is under the chin, the scar is virtually imperceptible. Chin augmentation surgery takes about thirty minutes to an hour.
What To Expect After The Surgery
Chin augmentation surgery is traditionally done on an out-patient basis. Immediately after surgery, Dr. Kridel applies a dressing that will remain in place for three to four days. Any pain is minimal and can be kept at bay with medication if needed. You may experience some tenderness and chewing will probably be limited immediately after surgery. We suggest patients follow a liquid and soft food diet for a few days after surgery. Normal activities can be resumed a week later, however you should void strenuous exercise for three weeks and contact sports for six weeks. Patients can feel a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. After several weeks, most swelling will be gone and you can enjoy your results. You won’t be able to feel the implant because it assumes the consistent and feel of your own tissue
What About Insurance?
Insurance does not cover chin augmentation (chin implant) surgery that is purely for cosmetic reasons. Surgery to correct or improve a genetic deformity or a traumatic injury may be reimbursable in whole or in part. However, it is the patient’s responsibility to determine coverage eligibility with their insurance carrier.
Are chin implants safe?
Chin implants have a good record for safety and patient satisfaction. We use medical grade materials and will be happy to show you samples of implants during your consultation.
