Houstonians are fortunate to have access to the talents of facial plastic surgeon Russell W. H. Kridel, M.D., F.A.C.S., who is one of the country's best surgeons, and certainly a top Houston plastic surgery specialist. Because his skills are well known and widely admired, Dr. Kridel is often invited to speak at worldwide meetings of doctors, and only a few years ago, he was named president of a prestigious academy of facial plastic surgeons who perform the lion's share of facial cosmetic surgery in the United States today.

His vast range of experience not only makes Dr. Kridel a sought-after speaker at meetings and courses nationwide, but his innovations and techniques make him an A-list interviewee for all forms of media.

Extremely articulate at describing procedures and benefits, Dr. Kridel has been interviewed by the CBS Early Show in New York, featured often in national magazines, and has been a featured medical authority for Texas publications and TV segments.

Amazingly, he is the one Houston facial plastic surgeon who actually has patient photographs in Encyclopedia Britannica and Compton's Encyclopedia . He also has written chapters for textbooks on cosmetic surgery, has introduced a technique that is now a required part of study courses for residents, has edited a book on revision rhinoplasty (a procedure people come from all over the world to have him do), and has been featured as Best Plastic Surgeon in Houston for nose surgery in a 2003 issue of the Houston Chronicle . In November 2003, he made Vogue Magazine, where he was the only facial plastic surgeon noted for Texas.

Texas cosmetic surgeon Russell Kridel began his higher education at Stanford University, where he earned his B.A. in 1970. In 1968, he studied art and history in Florence, Italy, and during that time, became fascinated with what proved to be a lifelong interest--Beauty Through the Ages. He credits his time spent abroad as a pivotal period in his development of an aesthetic eye, which has set him apart in a field in which a refined artistic sense is of paramount importance.

After deciding that facial plastic surgery would be his life's work, houston cosmetic surgeon Kridel went on to attend medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he was awarded his M.D. in 1975. He studied at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he did residencies in general surgery and in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. During residency, Dr. Kridel co-authored a book on medical cost containment that the American Medical Association published. Always an activist for excellence in health care delivery, Dr. Kridel has testified before Congress and has represented his specialty in matters that the AMA has addressed.

Dr. Kridel was board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1981. In 1984, he became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons . Since 1984, he has been a fellowship director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which means that he trains a fellow in facial plastic surgery every year (numerous applicants vie for the position of his annual fellow, in hopes of having the opportunity of working alongside Dr. Kridel).

In 1991, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery certified him and he became one of its first fellows. Today he serves on the board of directors and is a board examiner in facial plastic surgery for both the American Board of Otolaryngology and the ABFPRS. In 1987, Dr. Kridel was certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, giving him a total of three board certifications.

Dr. Kridel has been in private practice in Houston, Texas, since 1981, and he specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and neck, with special emphasis on cosmetic and reconstructive rhinoplasty and aging face surgery. He is a noted expert in primary rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction following accidents or unsuccessful surgeries performed elsewhere. Patients from all over the world come to Dr. Kridel to have him do their septal perforation surgery . He is a noted specialist in this very difficult surgical procedure. Also, he is spearheading the largest ongoing study in the U.S. on the use of irradiated cartilage grafting in nose reconstruction.

Dr. Kridel is also a recognized laser expert, and has established the Cosmetic Laser Institute of Texas, which hosts four state-of-the-art lasers that are used to address a variety of patient concerns, ranging from tattoo and birthmark removal to the elimination of wrinkles and hair.

Dr. Kridel currently serves on the faculty at the University of Texas Medical School Houston as a Clinical Professor and a Director of Facial Plastics Education, and previously served on the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, and he is on the medical staff of several Houston hospitals. He was chief of staff of HealthSouth Hospital for Specialized Surgery in 2002, and Dr. Kridel was president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 2000 to 2001. He has served as AAFPRS vice-president for public affairs, treasurer, and is a member of the executive committee and the board of directors.

Speaking engagements have taken Dr. Kridel to cities throughout the U.S., as well as locations in Italy, Colombia, Jordan, Mexico, Canada, Egypt, Holland, and Japan. He has published more than 60 book chapters and scientific articles in medical journals.

Years ago, in plastic surgeon Houston, Dr. Kridel established the charitable Face Foundation, which helps battered victims of domestic violence by providing free reconstructive facial surgery.
