Rhinoplasty Surgical Technique
There are two general surgical approaches to nasal surgery, open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. With open rhinoplasty, also referred to as external rhinoplasty, a very small incision is made between the nostrils on the underside of the nose. This allows the tip of the nose to be opened to gain a better view and access to the underlying structures of the lower and middle third of the nose. The incision lines heal nicely, leaving scars that are virtually undetectable. With the many more complex nasal cases referred to FPSA, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney have extensive experience in the exacting technique involved in open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty, or endonasal rhinoplasty, is an approach in which all incisions are confined to the inside of the nostrils, resulting in no visible skin incisions. This technique is used on noses with features that are more easily corrected when the tip of the nose has good shape and is not too long, too wide, over or under projected, and the dorsum is straight. The appropriate approach, be it open or closed, depends upon the complexity and difficulty of each patient’s nose and is determined by the surgeon. Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney will discuss his recommended approach with you during your consultation once he has completed his evaluation of your specific needs and aesthetic goals.

I had revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Kridel in March of 2023. It has now been 1 year since my surgery and I am extremely pleased with the results! I originally met with Dr. Kridel in 2017 to discuss my initial rhinoplasty I was contemplating. I loved Dr. Kridel during our first meeting. However, I allowed other people’s (family & friends) opinions of what the procedure should cost and what I needed to have done influence my decision. I had rhinoplasty done in 2019 with a different doctor. 4 years later I had a large divot on one side, the opposite side had multiple subtle bumps, I had to pull my airway open on one side to breath through both nostrils, among other things. When I made the decision to have a revision done in 2023 I started my research over and found a couple doctors who specialized in revisions. At the end of the day I knew in my heart who was the right choice and, based on my previous experience, I decided to go with the doctor I trusted, Dr. Kridel. I was very nervous at my first consultation because I was embarrassed that I was coming back 6 years later asking him to fix what another surgeon did. He was extremely kind, professional, understanding and non judgmental. I was so relieved and happy, I knew right away that this was the right choice. From my initial consultation, my surgery, the follow ups, interactions with the staff and fellows, to a year later… I can’t say enough nice things about Dr. Kridel and his entire staff. I had a bump on my nose that bothered me for years and years. I avoided taking photos like the plague. I finally decided to do something about it. So, I went to see him and another doc for a Rhinoplasty consultation. WOW! Did I make the right decision. My nose looks amazing! My friends have given me lots of compliments. During/After Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited outpatient surgical facility and typically take 3-4 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the surgery. Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney do not pack your nose. Instead, splints of soft material inside your nose hold the newly repositioned tissue in place. You will be seen the very next day, and the material will be removed. Like all of our surgical patients, we will also see you multiple times over the following two weeks, months, and up to a year. Our high standard of patient care, including follow-up care, is heralded by all our patients. The surgical techniques and pre-operative and post-operative care are designed to minimize bruising, and patients often comment that the discomfort is far less than they expected. Swelling will take place, but the majority subsides within a few weeks. Your nose will continue to improve over the months to come until you see the final result “settle in” within a year.

Combining Procedures?
It is extremely common for patients to have septoplasty surgery simultaneously as rhinoplasty surgery because they have a deviated or damaged septum. Many patients also need enlarged turbinate correction to improve breathing, which is also done at the same time as the septoplasty and rhinoplasty if needed. To achieve their ideal aesthetic goal, some patients also have chin augmentation at the same time to correct a receding chin.

Turbinates and Rhinoplasty?
At your consultation, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney complete a thorough examination, including an evaluation of the internal septum and other key internal nasal passage structures called turbinates. The turbinates, three in each nasal passage, are finger-like shelves attached to the lateral wall of the nasal passages. Their function is to help moisturize, filter, and warm incoming air—the lower, or inferior, turbinate plays a major part in airflow volume. Enlargement of the turbinates takes up valuable space and can cause nasal obstruction. In these cases, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney will recommend inferior turbinate surgery to help improve your nasal obstruction.
Does Insurance Cover Surgery?
Insurance does not cover rhinoplasty because it is an elective, cosmetic procedure. Most patients also have septoplasty surgery performed at the same time to correct a septal deviation or other “functional” medical condition. Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney do not accept insurance and are considered as out-of-network providers. We provide our patients with appropriate paperwork that they can file with their insurance carrier if they so choose.
Can My Heritage be Preserved?
Rhinoplasty surgery is a procedure that can be performed on individuals of all races. With skill and precision, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney make great efforts to ensure that the ethnic heritage of their patients is preserved during surgery.
