Before and After Chemical Peel
Did you ever wish you could peel away dry, weathered, wrinkled skin and find smoother, younger skin beneath?

That's the job of a chemical peel (also called phenol or deep peel).

Aging creates a network of fine, spidery lines and wrinkles around your eyes, above your upper lip, and across the face, and if you smoke or sunbathe, these wrinkles are often very pronounced. Since a face lift doesn't eliminate wrinkles, a peel is often an adjunct to this popular surgical procedure.

How does a chemical peel work?

Essentially, a chemical peel is exactly what it sounds like. Dr. Kridel uses cotton swabs to paint a special solution on the area of your face that you want treated. You'll experience a very brief stinging sensation as it's applied. Afer 30 minutes, the area will feel like a mild sunburn (you ease discomfort with medication).

Having your whole face done requires a day in the hospital--unless you choose to have your face done in segments in the doctor's office. Dr. Kridel can treat a small area in the office setting.

Questions and Answers

What comes after the peel?
You can expect a great deal of swelling, especially if a large area is done. Crusts form, and you won't want to be seen in public. This is the time to remind yourself that the inconvenience is only temporary.

To keep the crusts soft and facilitate healing, you'll apply a bland ointment frequently, as well as cold compresses. In a week or so, the crusts will begin to fall off and your new skin will appear--delicate, pink, and wrinkle-free. In early weeks, expect to be bright red--again, a temporary bother that you can cover with makeup. Over the next six to eight weeks, you'll watch your new skin improve daily.

Caveats for a chemical peel:

  • Avoid the sun for three to four months because it can make your new skin blotchy.
  • Use a sunblock religiously (always a good idea!).
  • Try to be patient with the brief discomfort of chemical peeling. The tradeoff is a smooth complexion that can last for many years.
Remember, too, that Dr. Kridel also offers lighter peels, with little discomfort and a quicker return to normal activity. Their downside is that they only yield a fresher-looking face, not eradication of wrinkles.
