Today, most people want clean, sleek bodies and faces. That's why many Houstonians decide to have a laser hair removal treatment that will reduce hair permanently. At the offices of Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, new laser hair removal technology makes reducing facial and body hair easy and comfortable. Lasers such as Cynosure's Apogee are major innovations, selectively targeting hair follicles while sparing surrounding skin.
According to Newsweek: “It's now the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for the under-35 set. Among all ages, it’s second only to BOTOX®.” Since the laser uses only light to remove the hair, it does not cause the irritation that other hair removal methods may create. Plus the laser hair removal treats many hairs with each intermittent pulse making the treatment much faster than electrolysis. Not all devices marketed as lasers for hair removal are true monochromatic lasers. Some are only light systems of many wavelengths. The effectiveness of a laser surpasses those light systems found in some spas and salons.
You, the laser hair removal patient, won't feel much more than a "sting," and for many, the results last six months or more. For very sensitive areas, a topical anesthetic cream is applied before treatments, but all treatments are comfortable because the equipment has a cooling device.
Results will depend on your skin pigmentation and the color of your hair (dark hair absorbs the laser energy, making it easier to treat), so you will first need to determine if you are a good candidate. The laser's energy has a specific wavelength that is absorbed by the dark pigment in the area that causes hair growth located in the root of the hair follicle while not heating the rest of the skin. This pigment is present only when the hair is in its active growth stage. Hair growth has three stages--active, nourishing, and resting. When hair is in any stage other than active, it's not producing the pigment the laser targets. For the laser hair removal to treat these hairs successfully, the hairs must pass into the active stage. That's why we need to do several laser treatments to meet a patient's needs.
The best results occur with those who have fair skin and black hair. Keep in mind that you must wait until a tan fades before planning a laser hair removal treatment, as dark or tanned skin attracts more light energy, drawing the energy away from hair follicles; and you risk experiencing burning, skin discoloration, or not removing all of the unwanted hair.
For best laser hair removal results, we can schedule your treatments at appropriate intervals that will maximize the laser's effect. It usually takes three to four treatments to eliminate hair growth in a given area, and some patients want more treatments to disable hairs that were between growth phases during the first treatment.
Treatments are quick and very comfortable, we can treat the face and bikini lines in a matter of minutes. Each laser pulse treats an area of approximately an inch in diameter, which might contain more than 10 hairs. The amount of time needed depends on the size of the area to be treated. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than fifteen minutes, while legs, backs and larger areas can take longer.
