Droop No More

As we age, we can do so much to keep our quality of life high by staying healthy and exercising. New anti-aging regimens including proper diet, anti-oxidants and sometimes hormone replacements can keep our bodies in optimal shape. But, there are certain aging processes over which we have no control. One of those is, surprisingly, the aging and drooping of the nose. Yes, in addition to the ears, the nose does grow with age whether or not one is always truthful (a la Pinocchio).

What really happens is that the cartilage in the lower third of the nose separates and weakens and the tip falls making it appear that a hump has grown on the bridge. Through surgery, the nose can be rejuvenated; the tip can be re-supported with a cartilage graft and the cartilages can be shortened. This is the same procedure we do on young people who were born with droopy noses to begin with. It’s amazing to see how much younger one looks when the droopy tip is elevated. Also, unknown to most of the public is the fact that nasal breathing decreases as the nose droops and the re-elevation of the tip can improve air flow.
