Benefits is over seen by a doctor and employs a full-time physician's assistant, wich is not required by Texas law. "Our entire staff is medically trained," he said.
And though the cream is hardly cheap -the firs vial, wich includes the DNA testing and will last three to four months, cost $400- it is still more affordable than most cosmetic procedures.
While advacements in lasers, injections and skin-care products can help restore youthful appearance in many patients, physicians warn that were prodcuts are used improperly or offlabel, the results can be devastating.
Dr. Steven Hamilton, a Houston-based plastic surgeon in practice for nearly 25 years, cites Radiese as an example of a frequently misused injectable filler. While it's been FDA-approved as a filler since late 2004, it is not approved for use in the face.
"Radiesse is a very good filler," said Hamilton, "but it needs to be used in specific areas (of the body)."
Derived from synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite, which is found naturally in human bones, the filler should not be injected superficially, said Kridel. If it is used similarly to collagen for plumping lips, he said, "it can result in hard bumps that have to be cut out (surgically)."
Cosmetic surgery is a rapidly progressing field, said Hamilton. Through stem cell research, scientists are learning more about the causes of aging. "As the commplexities, morally and govermentally, get ironed out, we´ll begin to understand the genetic components of aging."
Improvements in existing treatments also show promise, he said. Soon, Restylane may become more concentrated and longer lasting. "It might take the place of cheek or chin implants," said Hamilton.
He cautiones that while patients may be eager to try the latest procedures, it is important to make sure a therapy has been on the market long enough go to be properly evaluated.
"There´s a lot of 'new' out there, but don´t be the first kid on the block to get it," he advised.
