Male Rhinoplasty

Quite a large number of male patients are indeed reasonable and do well postoperatively. The advent of computer imaging further helps to serve as a screening device. It has enabled the surgeon and the patient to come to a common goal so that there is no misunderstanding as to what the patient wants and how reasonable that request is in terms of the surgical possibility of obtaining that result. If the patient requests a feminized nose or spends a prolonged time in studying the image or asking for minute changes, there may be problems that require further evaluation. The engineer-type man may be particularly troublesome because he expects the same exactness in rhinoplasty as in his work. He must be made to understand that the nose is not like a piece of wood or steel that can be cut to precise specifications, but rather is a biologic tissue that must heal, and therefore may not truly mirror the imaged goal. The engineer-type, who may simply just not understand the biologic factor in surgery, must be differentiated from the psychologically impaired man with a nose fixation, who stares endlessly into the mirror, pointing out intolerances of nasal irregularities that even the finest surgeon would find difficult to discern.
